In this tutorial, we show you how to root your Google Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone. Rooting will allow you to get full âadminâ access so you can install rooted apps such as Viper4Audio, Xposed, Titanium Backup app, and much more.
Rooting involves unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe EVERYTHING on your phone so please BACKUP everything beforehand!
This root method will work on all Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook. While the video tutorial is made with Windows, you can substitute the commands for Mac, Linux, or Chromebook below easily.

Download the Universal ADB driver installer (9.2 MB) from here. Extract the ZIP file, select the.exe file inside the extracted folder and hit Enter key on the keyboard. Download Files Required for Rooting:
Download Adb Fastboot Zip
Unzip the USB drivers into âusb_driverâ folder and fastboot.zip into âfastbootâ folder in your Downloads directory.
Also unzip the boot image and copy the file âboot-to-root.imgâ into the âfastbootâ folder.
Step 1. Go to Settings->About phone and tap on the âBuild numberâ about 5 times until it says âYou are now a developer!â
Step 2. Tap on the back button once, then tap on âDeveloper optionsâ.
Step 3. Make sure âOEM unlockingâ is checked ON.
Step 4. Power off your Pixel or Pixel XL. Then hold down Volume Down and Power buttons together for about 5-7 seconds until you see the bootloader menu (where the Android lies belly up).
Step 5. Connect a USB Type C cable from your phone to your computer.
Step 6. For Windows, install the drivers. If you do not know how to do this, watch the video tutorial. No drivers are required for Mac, Linux, and Chromebook.
Step 7. Open up a command prompt for Windows or terminal for Mac/Linux/Chromebook and type:
For Windows/Chromebook:
cd Downloads cd fastboot fastboot flashing unlock
For Mac:
cd Downloads cd fastboot chmod 755 * ./fastboot-mac flashing unlock
For Linux/Ubuntu
cd Downloads cd fastboot chmod 755 * sudo ./fastboot-linux flashing unlock
Step 8. Go to your Pixel or Pixel XL screen, use the Volume keys to select âYesâ then hit the Power key. Your phone should reboot into bootloader mode.
Step 9. Next type:
For Windows/Chromebook:
fastboot boot boot-to-root.img
For Mac:
./fastboot-mac boot boot-to-root.img
For Linux:
sudo ./fastboot-linux boot boot-to-root.img
Step 10. Your phone will reboot. After rebooting, sign into your phone.
Step 11. If you do not see SuperSU app in your app drawer, put it back into bootloader mode (repeat Step 4-5) then redo Step 9. You should see SuperSU on the second try if it didnât work first time.
Step 12. Open the SuperSU app and if you donât get any errors, you have successfully rooted your Pixel or Pixel XL! Congrats!
Step 13. You can verify you have full root by installing and running any rooted app like Titanium Backup app. You should see a Superuser request window pop up.

A: You can always relock your bootloader using commands âfastboot flashing lockâ which will âunvoidâ your warranty. We are not sure on Google stance for Pixel or Pixel XL phones yet but we âthinkâ itâs okay as it has been in the past.

There are two methods to set up ADB and Fastboot drivers on your Windows 10,8,8.1,7 and XP. First one is 15 Sec ADB Installer and the second one is Minimal ADB and Fastboot. Both the methods have been explained briefly here. Before we take you to the installation procedure, make sure to enable USB Debugging mode on your Android device.
Install ADB and Fastboot driver on Windows with 15 sec ADB installer:
Step 1: Firstly, download the ADB Installer setup file by XDA member @Snoop05. This not only installs ADB but also installs fastboot and USB Drivers on your Windows PC under 15 seconds.
Step 2: Now you need to run the Exe file adb-setup.exe

Step 3: Now a command windows pops-up and you need to follow the instructions carefully. Finally, type âYâ to start installing ADB and Fastboot drivers.
Step 4: Once done, again you need to type âYâ to install the device drivers. Wait for a while till the installation process is completed.

Step 1: Download the Minimal ADB and Fastboot Setup by XDA member @shimp208

Step 3: Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the installation process.
Step 4: Finally you have successfully installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot on your Windows PC.
Step 1: Download Android Command Line Tools to your Mac and extract it.
Step 2: Open the extracted folder and then Tools folder.
Step 3: Next double-click the âandroidâ icon. A Terminal window will open, and seconds later, you will also see the Android SDK Manager window open up. This Android SDK Manager will help to download ADB and Fastboot on your Mac.
